Use of the Stage

Use Of The Stage

It is important to move with purpose. You don't want to just wonder from spot to spot.

This can be very distracting to your audience.

You need to develop your neutral stance, how you stand when you are not moving your hands or your feet. This can be very hard. As a hyper active person it is extremely difficult for me to stand still. I would find myself just moving from side to side, swaying back and forth or just wondering around.

To break this habit, I would practice giving my speech or presentation just standing still, not moving my feet, not moving my hands, just standing.

Try standing in front of a mirror for 5 minutes.

This will give you a feel for what it is like. Then take a look at your speech or presenta-tion and see if you have any action or movement words. These are good times to move from one location to another.

Another good way to move on stage is with a time-line.

How to Grab Your Audience’s Attention in Seconds

You have exactly 7 seconds from the time you step in front of your audience until your audience decides if they are going to listen to you. You have exactly 30 seconds before your audience determines if they are going to check-out or pay attention to the remained of your speech or presentation.

What does this mean to you as the speaker?

If you spend too much time on blaring pleasantries, you will loose your audience even before you get started.

Here are 6 tips to help you grab your audience's attention.

1. Be prepared

Before you step out in front of your audience, whether you are presenting from the stage or in front of a board room, you need to know exactly what your first words and actions are going to be. It's a good idea to script out your first sentence or two and have it memorized to the point you could say it in your sleep.

2. Be familiar with where you will be presenting

If at all possible visit the location of the presentation before it is your turn to speak. You want to be familiar and comfortable with your location. This helps to build confidence. If you project an air of confidence from the stage, your audience will have more faith in your knowledge and skills. If you are speak-ing from a stage or platform, practice walking onto the stage. Look for things like, will I be coming out from behind a curtain, do I have to walk up steps, will there be a hand rail, how big is the stage?

Public Speaking: The Power of the Pause

When speaking, a pause is like a comma or period when you are writing. A pause is used to break up ideas, help emphasize an important point and acknowledge your audience's responses.

As you are practicing your prepared speech, consider pausing for a count of 2 when you encounter a comma and a count of up to 4 for a period.

If you are having difficulties pausing, because silence can be uncomfortable, then you will want to practice pausing even longer. When you exaggerate your pause during rehearsal, you will become more comfortable with the silence and your pause will be the appropriate time during your real speech or presentation.

Right before making an important point pause.

This grabs your audiences attention and lets them know they need to pay attention.
